Due to the large amounts of individuals that were not receiving treatment at the drug rehab in Columbia for their addiction for one reason or another, certain laws have been put into place mandating insurance plans to cover treatment for drug or alcohol addiction.  These types of laws are important to ensure individuals are getting the treatment they need.  Individuals in Columbia, Illinois have been in a quandary about what to do when their insurance will not cover rehab.

One of the more unfortunate aspects of the situation is that, regardless of these laws being put into place, many people are still not receiving treatment.  According to an article from Open Society Foundations, Dr. Kima Joy Taylor, director of the CATG (Closing the Addiction Treatment Gap) Initiative states, “Drug use is on the rise in this country and 23.5 million Americans are addicted to alcohol and drugs. That’s approximately one in every 10 Americans over the age of 12—roughly equal to the entire population of Texas.  But only 11 percent of those with an addiction receive treatment.” This is a ridiculous and unacceptable amount of individuals who are not receiving treatment.

Steps to Take if Insurance Will Not Cover

When health insurance will not cover treatment, some give up at this point and end up either not getting treatment or using state funding which can be a long wait.  Remember in the majority of states, there are laws and regulations in place for insurance companies covering substance abuse that they must adhere to. This is not a point to give up, but rather ensure that all that can be done about it, is done.  Challenging your insurance company may be the difference between getting coverage or not.  Be sure to review the employee benefits book thoroughly to see what is covered in your plan.

The fact is that some insurance companies will find workarounds to avoid paying out for substance abuse treatment.  This is a time to be steadfast against your insurance company to ensure they cover what they are supposed to.  The agencies in your state upholding these laws need to know when issues like this arise, so that they can be corrected.  Reach to your state agencies if need be, such as the state insurance department.  When substance abuse treatment is outlined in the benefits, but the insurance company is not abiding by this, they need to be fought to ensure they provide the service they are required to.

Some individuals find themselves with no insurance, or insurance without coverage for substance abuse.  There are resources available for these individuals.  People with insurance should be sure to always review their benefits prior to assuming it does not cover.  Individuals finding themselves with no insurance whatsoever, or guaranteed no coverage can reach to state funded programs.  Another option is filing for Medicaid or Medicare; these sometimes provide coverage for certain types of substance abuse treatment.
